Things are rolling.
This week, The Wheel hit two milestones. First, we had our read-through of At Sea, Staring Up. It's one thing to know who your cast will be leading up to rehearsals; it's quite another to have them in the same place for the first time. This play has lived inside my head for quite a while, to the point where I could hear it clamoring to get out. To finally hear voices speak these words aloud - not just any voices, but the right voices - was a powerful experience. At a certain point, early on, I realized I had the freedom to stop looking at my script, to stop imagining how these words would sound, and instead closed my eyes and listened to the scene being read. Already, Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Adrian and Nick have such clear notions of who these characters are, and are giving it their all to tell their stories with integrity and passion. The relationships no longer exist solely on the page; they're beginning to breathe and grow. Our second milestone was finally meeting face-to-face with Finegan Kruckemeyer, the playwright. Earlier this year, Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences commissioned a play by Fin that has evolved into his newest work, Where Words Once Were, premiering in early November. While in town for rehearsals, he was gracious enough to take time out of his busy schedule to meet with myself and Elizabeth Floyd (Co-Founder, Managing Director and actor) for a drink. Having the opportunity to meet after several years of correspondence and talk freely about At Sea, Staring Up with its creator was an immeasurable gift, and we are grateful to Fin for his time, generosity, spirit, and friendship. At long last, The Wheel's family is growing. We can't wait to find out what we're capable of - together. Jack Read Director of At Sea, Staring Up
